My Year of meats Question. P.15 #8
I think that the statement that Jane makes in the book about in the next millennium the idea of an indigenous person or plant or culture will seem quaint could be a scary truth. If this were to happen I think it would be a step away from a diverse well- textured world because people would forget about their cultures, languages and their traditions if people lost their traditions and culture it would make for a very boring would that lived only by one set of cultures and traditions. I do believe that it is possible to maintain cultural diversity without prejudice; however our society has not evolved that far. Each generation we become a little closer to no prejudice, we as a world need to come together and put skin color and fear of each other behind us and learn to get along together. I think and hope that one day our world will come to the point where prejudice no longer exists, I just hope that by that time we have not all assimilated into one culture.

Jane fights the American Family stereotypes
The families that the Japanese TV producers and the BEEF-EX executives want to see are those families that are seen as the stereotypical “American Family” which consists of a white man, a white woman, and 2-3 healthy white children. However because this is not the reality most American families Jane decides to pick families herself that do not necessarily meet those standards.
Jane’s first episode is with the Flower family who are white middle class family. When making this episode the only complaint about it was the meat which was too plain. The complaints were not about the family and they wanted Jane to continue with white middle class families, but she had other things in mind.
Jane chose the Martinez family and they were not the stereotypical American family because both the mother and the father were from Mexico and had made it in time to the U.S. for their son to be born. The Martinez family was the mark of a whole new beginning for “My American Wife!”
After the Martinez family it was the Beaudroux family from Louisiana. They were definitely not the stereotypical American family, despite the fact that they were white and had two white children; they also had ten adopted Korean children. This really made them stand out and made Jane interested in them.
Next Jane had wanted to do an episode with the Dawes family. They were not the stereotypical American family either because mom and dad were black and had nine black children. They were ultimately vetoed by “John” Ueno because they were not white and they were not making a beef dish. They ended up filming a stereotypical American family instead who made beef.
The Bukowskys seemed to be a stereotypical American family, both parents were white and the daughter was white, however the daughter was in a wheelchair because of a motorcycle accident. Due to the daughter’s disability they were no longer seen as a stereotypical American family. Jane had taken interest in them and did an episode with them that turned out to be the highest rated episode in Japan so far.
Lara and Dyann were the next non-stereotypical American family that Jane did an episode with. They were a lesbian couple with two children. On top of not being the stereotypical American they were also vegetarians so they did not make meat on the show. This episode upset many people and Jane apologized for it, but I think she was still pleased that it made it on the air.
Jane chose to make the episodes about the non-stereotypical American families because she wanted to show Japan that America was not full of white people who always eat beef. Jane wanted to show Japan the diversities of America and the realities of what are real American families.

Akiko, Jane and Sei Shonagon: Similarities and dissimilarities
The three main characters of this novel have both similarities and dissimilarities. When first introduced to these characters one might think that they are all complete opposites but when you read further on you see that they all have something in common with each other.
Jane wants to be a documentary filmmaker and lives in a small apartment in New York City. She is struggling to survive until one day she gets a call to help with the production of “My American Wife!” Jane is an independent woman who does not need a man to take care of her and give meaning to her life.
Akiko on the surface seems to be Jane’s complete opposite. She is an abused housewife who does everything her husband “John” tells her to, besides buying him the right type of condoms. However Akiko was not always this way, she herself used to be an independent woman who made her living by writing copy for comic books. In a way Akiko and Jane were very alike before Akiko got married. They were both independent and they both worship the writings of Sei Shonagon. I believe Akiko wishes she was still writing copy for comic books because she seems very unhappy in her marriage. I believe Jane was also unhappy in her previous marriage and that is why she decided to get out of it.
Sei Shonagon was a very independent woman and very ahead of her times. She learned how to write with the bold characters that were only used by men at that time. She inspired Jane to use men’s Japanese and to be different. In many ways Jane has become a lot like Shonagon. Akiko herself also admires Shonagon, she inspired Akiko to make the lists like she herself had made.
When given a first glance at the three main characters of this book one would think that they had absolutely nothing in common, one was a housewife, one was a filmmaker, and the other was from a whole different century. However once you dig deeper into the story you see that Jane, Akiko, and Sei Shonagon all have certain qualities in common.

Non-traditional rhetorical analysis of "Red Shoes"
Dear Susan Griffin,I just finished reading your “Red Shoes” essay and might I just say I have never read an essay like that before. It was truly wonderful. It was almost as if I was reading two essays at once, but yet they were completely connected, this was very ingenious of you!
I felt as though you essay consisted of both private and public parts. The parts in Roman type seemed to be the public parts of the essay that would be the sort of things that a writer would not be shy about sharing with others. I really enjoyed the way you would always have the public parts and the private parts, that were in the italics, connected. It was confusing what exactly you were doing in this essay at first, but in the end it all came together and made perfect sense.
I like the way you used color in this essay. The red in the essay represented different things for the different people of this essay, for you as a little girl you liked red because it was your mother’s favorite color and it seemed as though your grandmother did not like it. As a child red meant different things to you, such violence, whereas for the woman smelling roses in the park it seemed to be a happy color for her. I think the black robe in you story represents the way your grandmother tried to cover up her wrong doings to you. The peach I believe is supposed to represent calm in the story because it is the color of the sheets and in bed is where most people seem to be the calmest.
I really enjoyed your essay; it was beautifully laid out and had such a fresh format which allowed you to intertwine public and private. I appreciate it that you took the time to read this letter and I hope to read something else of yours very soon.
Sincerely,
Melissa Mooney

Postcard analysis: Kelsey Rubbo, Peter Goodwin and Melissa Mooney
Not your daughter: The background of the postcard is a family photo of a little girl on a bumper boat. Her face is blackened out because she does not know her own identity. This shows that she could have been adopted. The words at the bottom that say “I know I’m not your daughter” are hand-written making it more personable.
Shredding work: This postcard has the shredded work in the background that the person did not want to do helping visualize the work that they shred. The text is official text that is typed out, like the text that they use in the documents that were shredded. The happy face at the end of the text shows that the person found it humorous and did not care that what they were doing was wrong. The postcard is neat and well put together which is strange because it seems like this person is lazy when it comes to work.
Tough with tattoo: This postcard has a picture of a girl’s back with a tattoo and typed words glued to the picture. The tattoo says “be tough” to remind her to be tough so she can stop cutting herself. However the text says that this did not help her and under the second line of text there is blood dripping symbolizing her still cutting herself.

Postsecret Analysis
Pregnant: This postcard gives the viewer a very sad feeling. There is a picture of a couple cutting their wedding cake and at the bottom of the card it says “I’m not really pregnant.” This makes the viewer assume that perhaps she had told him that she was pregnant so that he would marry her. Both of the faces are crossed out in the picture because maybe she did not want people to recognize her or maybe she did not want people to be able to put a face to a person who is so deceptive. She may have crossed the faces out because she was happy that day and now she feels guilt so she is erasing the happiness.
I didn’t vote but I told everyone I did: This postcard is very bright giving the feeling that the person who made it was not really sad when they made it. The colors used are red and blue which are patriotic colors and maybe the person feels as though they did not fulfill their duties as a citizen to vote. The person who made this card is a dishonest person because they told everyone that they had voted when they really hadn’t.
Here: This postcard has a happy vibe to it because it is a pretty picture of Chicago and then the whole tone of the card changes when you look in the lower left-hand corner which says “I fucked you wife here.” This turns the card into something about deception, rather than sharing a picture of a fun vacation, it becomes sharing a deep dark secret. It is not something that one would expect when they first look at the postcard. The black small black type on the bottom left hand corner makes the message straight forward and is not in fancy or fun writing to make the message less serious.
Thanksgiving pic: The picture on the postcard is of a turkey and the words around the picture read “We’re only coming out of guilt.” First you believe that it is just a Thanksgiving postcard but then you read the text and it totally changes the mood of the card. Perhaps the person who made this is going to Thanksgiving dinner because they felt bad for the person who was making it, or perhaps the person made them feel guilty for not wanting to come. The text is in black on a white background to make it straight forward because what they have to say is not something that is happy news.

Postcard Analysis. Kelsey Rubbo, Peter Goodwin, & Melissa Mooney
Without you: The text of this post card is fun which represents the fact that the person obviously does not care that the other person is dead. They also did not put a lot of effort into making the postcard because the picture is crooked as well as the letters. The photo itself is crinkled and the colors are dull and faded which gives the postcard a depressing feeling. This postcard gives a strong vibe that this person really does not care about the person who died.
Forever: This postcard gives you the feeling that the woman is very sad because in the picture she is colored blue, there is also a rain cloud above her indicating that she is in a sad mood. The rings in the postcard can represent that she wants to be proposed to. She makes it very clear that she is serious about wanting to be proposed to because she underlines forever and she outlines the pictures of the rings.
Fire: The fire represents the person’s desire to be more dangerous because fire is very dangerous and can hurt you. The black text on the white paper at the bottom makes it very clear what the person wants and does not hide behind fancy font and colors. The setting of the picture, a backyard barbeque, indicates that perhaps it is a male who made it and wants to take more risks in his day to day life such as adding more fuel to the fire.

Analysis of wartime poster
The purpose of this wartime poster and many other wartime posters is to get young men to enlist in the army. Their main targets were young males between the ages of 16 and 30 who could be easily persuaded to enlist because they felt an obligation to fight for their country. The thing that you first see in this poster is the finger pointing at you; it is as if the finger is actually coming out of the poster. This automatically gets your attention because it makes you feel as though the poster is directly pointed at you and drawing you in. The words read “Are YOU doing all you can?” emphasizing the “you”. This makes the viewer question themselves wondering if they really are doing all they can. There is also no face to go with the hand which is kind of scary because you are not exactly sure who it is that is pointing at you. The red, white, and blue colors of this poster give it a patriotic feel which would make most Americans feel connected with the poster.
This poster would make young men feel as though they are not doing all they can to help their country and could in turn make them sign up for the army. The designer of this poster did a good job of trying to install fear and guilt in this poster. It seems almost impossible for a young male during war time not to be effected by all the recruitment posters because they all send a strong message for them to enroll in the army the way this poster did.

Rhetorical Analysis
The purpose of movie poster designers is to draw the attention of the public and make them want to see that movie. Different cultures around the world are going to be attracted to different things.
Each poster gives you a different sense of the movie. In the first poster it looks as though the man wants the woman and she is refusing him, and then on the left-hand side of the poster you can see half of the man’s face and he looks very angry, perhaps indicating that he is upset that she does not want him. This first poster gives you the feeling that the movie is going to be about this man that wants the woman but she does not share the desire for him, and that perhaps he turns violent because as you can see in the poster he is forcing himself on her and she is trying to back away. The people in this poster are very bright against the black background so that you notice them, and then there is an angry face in the red part to the left that really draws you in. The face in the red really makes you feel as though the movie is going to be a scary film.
The second poster gives you a whole different feeling on what you think the movie is going to be about. In this poster there is a photograph of a man and woman hugging each other and then in the background there is a picture of a man covering a woman’s mouth as to keep her quiet. This poster makes you feel as though the man and woman are lovers and perhaps they are running away from something. Also in this poster the names of the actors are much bigger than in the other three, this may be because the actors are much more well-known in the United States and people might be likely to see this movie because of the actors. The colors of this poster are very bright and catch your eye so that you actually look at the poster and in turn make you want to see this movie.
In the third poster there is a big skull in the middle of the poster, the skull gives you the feeling that this movie might be a horror movie. There is also a bull’s eye in the middle of the forehead indicating that perhaps someone gets shot in the head and there is also what looks like finger prints on the chest which could make it seem as though it is a murder mystery movie. In this poster Hitchcock’s name is very big, perhaps indicating that he is well-known in this country. The colors on this poster are not very eye catching besides the bull’s eye in the middle of the forehead. Perhaps the designer wanted us to focus on this bull’s eye because the person had something wrong with their brain or they get shot in the head.
The fourth poster is a picture of a man and woman kissing on the front of the poster and in the background the man is carrying the woman out of the water. This poster makes you think that this movie is going to be a romance movie. Perhaps the man saved her from drowning and then they fell in love. In the picture with them kissing the woman is glancing to the side perhaps indicating that she is watching for someone, perhaps a husband or boyfriend because she may be in another relationship. The colors of this poster are very bright and inviting which gives you the feeling that this is going to be a feel good kind of movie with a happy ending.
All of these movie posters are very different and they all make you feel differently about what the movie is going to be about. If it was not known that these were all posters for one movie a person could assume that they were all for completely different movies. This show how differently societies look at posters and what attracts them to certain things.

Analyzing Titles- Shay Hemp and Melissa Mooney
Manufacturing Job loss: This title is not very interesting to us because its not creative, it is very straight forward. We think that it engages adults more because they are much more effected by job loss. We think the body of the paper is going to be about job loss.

Statement of Purpose
Audience: The audience is everybody who lives with other people and encounters issues with privacy. The main audience however is teens because they seem to have the most privacy issues when living at home with parents and siblings.
Context: People who read this are most likely upset over their privacy being invaded by the people that they live with.
Purpose: I want to teach people, mostly teens because they seem to be the ones who have the most difficulties with privacy, how to prevent their privacy from being invaded. I want to help those who are frustrated with the people they live with due to the lack of respect they receive for their personal space.
Statement of purpose: I want people to be able to live with one another without having to deal their privacy being invaded. I don’t want people to have to fight with each other because of privacy issues. I want to help people set up privacy guidelines in which they can all live by and be happy.

Design Plan
I would like to teach people, especially teenagers, how to live with one another without invading each other’s privacy. When living with others privacy becomes something that is not always respected and because of this people become upset with those that they are living with. I would like to teach people how to respect other’s privacy so they can live in peace.
For this plan my focus is to set up instructions for helping people, especially teenagers, on how to avoid having their privacy invaded by others. I will be making a booklet with step by step instructions on how to keep your thing private. I will make picture that go along with each instruction so that they will be easier to follow, and make it more interesting to read.

Poem: How to drive a car
Unlock the door,
Open the door,
Slide in the seat,
Buckle yourself in,
Release the E brake,
Step on the brake,
Put the car in reverse,
Check your rearview mirror,
Make sure nothing is in sight,
Place your foot lightly in gas,
Turn the wheel,
Place foot on brake,
Put car into drive,
Make sure nothing is in your way,
Place foot on gas pedal and,
GO!
Open the door,
Slide in the seat,
Buckle yourself in,
Release the E brake,
Step on the brake,
Put the car in reverse,
Check your rearview mirror,
Make sure nothing is in sight,
Place your foot lightly in gas,
Turn the wheel,
Place foot on brake,
Put car into drive,
Make sure nothing is in your way,
Place foot on gas pedal and,
GO!

Nomadic furniture questions
I think the overall purpose of these pages is to make simple furniture. They also want the furniture to be compact, nice to look at and somewhat comfortable.
I think the authors want to establish a relaxed and comfortable relationship with their readers. They use their nicknames so that you feel closer to them, almost as if you are a friend of theirs.
I think that if the words in the book had been typed and the illustrations not hand drawn it would make the book feel more formal. It would make it seem as though you were putting together furniture that you bought rather than what you made. I think it would have also made the reader feel as though they had to pay more attention to detail and be more precise.
I think that if the layout were more formal it would encourage you to be more precise and less creative because you would feel you have to follow the directions exactly.
I think the directions on the page are pretty simple to visualize, however if they had been a little more detailed you would not have to think about it in your head as much, it would just be there in front of you.
The purpose of showing people how to make this chair is so that they could have a chair that is easy to assemble, easy to disassemble, inexpensive, and small enough to store just about anywhere.

Letter to Cascadia Presidnt
Dear Cascadia President,
I would like to bring an important issue to your attention. I believe there needs to be an enclosed walkway connecting the Cascadia buildings to the library. As a hard working student it is very frustrating to have to walk all the way out of the Cascadia buildings over to the library. In between my classes I like to be able to go to the library to study and get work done. If we were to have an enclosed walkway it would save people like me those five minutes it takes to walk from the library to class. Those five minutes everyday would add up, it would give me about fifteen extra studying minutes a week. Those five minutes a day could be the deciding factor between me doing really well on an exam and just doing okay. It is unfair for students to have to walk outside in the cold and rain just to get to the library. I think that with an enclosed walkway, the library would be used by more Cascadia students. Thank you for reading this letter and I hope you take my suggestions into consideration.
Sincerely,
Melissa Mooney
Dear Cascadia President,
I think it would be cool if there were an enclosed walkway connecting the Cascadia buildings to the library. I think the students would appreciate it because they would not have to walk up and down the stairs and then out the building just to get to the library. I do not really use the library that often but I have heard other students talk about the inconvenience of it not being ideally accessible. If there were an enclosed walkway it would save me the walk outside when I occasionally visit the library. Well I hope you think about putting in an enclosed walkway because that would be really awesome.
Sincerely,
Melissa Mooney

Me as a communicator
a. I believe my strengths as a communicator are that I am able to keep a conversation going, I can tell people how I feel with not only my words but with my actions as well. I really enjoy talking especially when the topic is something that I am very interested in. I have a pretty good vocabulary and I know how words should be used. I am a really good listener, people are able to come to me and talk about anything and they know that I will listen and not judge. I think people also like to talk to me because they know I can give them insight and potential solutions to their problems. I am not very good with visual arrangement, I have never been very artist and I am not good at expressing myself through art. When it comes to communicating with others I am more comfortable with writing, it makes it easier to be able to put your thoughts together. However writing to someone rather than talking to them can lead to misinterpretation because they may take something you wrote as something that is bad and you would not be able to explain yourself. I do keep a journal because like to be able to write down my feelings and be able to look back on my past experiences. People say that I am a very funny person; I do not usually take myself too seriously. I do like to think about current issues and discuss them with others and hear different views on the subject. Some people say that I am a good communicator when it comes to most things; however some have said that I am a very bad communicator when I am upset with a person because when I get mad at someone I will not talk to them and that frustrates them.
b. I think what has contributed a lot to my communicational skills is my life experiences. My life experiences allow me to be able to relate to people and provide insight for them. My teachers in school have also helped me become better at communication because ever since kindergarten my teachers have made me interact and communicate with other students. My family has helped me become a better communicator by teaching me ways to interact with people and how to behave.

LA Confidential: Double identites and double meanings
In the movie L.A. Confidential many of the characters had secret identities that affected them all in different ways. Their secret identities allowed them to become different people and act differently than they would as their normal selves.
In the movie Lynn Broken pretends to be the movie star Veronica Lake. By becoming Veronica Lake, Lynn is able to go into the life of prostitution without it affecting her as much. In a way it is like Lynn is not sleeping with the men at all, rather it is Veronica that these men are fantasizing of and sleeping with. Lynn becomes lost in this character and does not respond the way she would have probably acted. Lynn was so used to sleeping with men to get her way that she slept with Ed Exley behind Bud’s back to help get blackmail on Exley. When Bud finds out he get very upset with Lynn and hits her and she realizes that what she did really hurt Bud. Lynn almost ruins her only relationship that she has as herself because she got caught up in being Veronica Lake.
Most of the officers in this movie live double lives. Jack Vincennes has another life outside his career as a cop; he is the technical advisor to Badge of honor. Jack loses sight of being a real cop on this show because he makes arrests that will sell magazines rather than provide justice. Sid Hudgens pays Jack money so that he can get pictures of the arrests Jack makes so that he can publish them in his magazine “Hush Hush.” Ed Exley is a detective who tries to shed his identity as “the son of legendary Preston Exley.” In trying to escape this identity Ed tries to become the best cop that he can so he can outshine his father. In his efforts to be the best detective it leads him to trying to solve the Nite Owl case. Captain Dudley Smith also lives a double life, apart from being Captain of the police force he is also a hardened criminal. For a long time Smith is able to get away with his crimes until the Nite Owl case. In the quest to find the real killers at the Nite Owl Ed and Bud come to the shocking revelation that it is one of their own, Dudley Smith, behind the murders. Smith’s secret life is what ultimately got him killed, because Ed shot him so that he would not be able to go on causing terror in the city.
Ultimately for the characters in the story leading a double life was not good. When you lead another life you get caught up in that life and forget who you are and start to make decisions that you would not normally make if you did not have the secret life to hide behind. I think that for the characters in this story the affects of living a double life were damaging because their secret identities cost them their lives.

Name
1. My name is Melissa and it is from the English language.
2.
b. History of my first name:
My mother chose the name Melissa for me because she liked it.
The name Melissa means bee in Greek. Melissa was the name of the nymph who took care of young Zues in Greek mythology. Melissa is also the name of the fairy who helps Rogero escape from the witch Alcina in the poem 'Orlando Furioso' by Ariosto.
3. I have never really thought too much about my name. My name has become part of who I am and how people identify me. Melissa is a good name and I like it.
I think that if I were to have a secret identity I would choose the name Kylie because I have always liked that name.
